The UNESCO Chair in Community Based Research & Social Responsibility in Higher Education, in association with Pandit Ravi Shankar Shukla University, Raipur and State Planning Commission, Government of Chhattisgarh is organizing a four-day workshop on ‘Capacity Building in Community Based Participatory Research’. This workshop is one of the events under the ‘Festival of Learning’ that the chair is organizing at several places and in collaboration with various higher education institutions. This festival marks the culmination of the project that the chair has been undertaking since the last two years on ‘Training the next generation of community based researchers’. As this study identifies the existential gaps in training in CBR, and comes forth with best practice models and recommendation, the Chair intends to use this festival and the events planned under it to promote learning and training in CBR.
The 12th Five Year Plan in India included emphasis on social responsibility in higher education, and UGC has since started a scheme for setting up ‘Centres For Social Responsibility & Community Engagement (CFSRCE)’ in selected universities. An integral part of such Centres is building capacity in universities for training and practice of CBR. The Festival of Learning is expected to help achieve this, by facilitating the process of building capacities across various universities.
Therefore, carrying forward this idea, this workshop at Pandit Ravi Shankar Shukla University, Raipur is primarily aims at building the capacities of students and faculty in Community Based Participatory Research. The four day workshop is divided into sessions which focus on different dimensions of CBPR, and enhancing the necessary skills sets that are required to pursue this. The chair intends to build on this initiative and provide students with CBR based research ideas which they can continue pursuing in the upcoming months, and which can then be followed up via a seminar meeting later this year.
Further, the Prime Minister of India has launched Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) on 2nd October 2014 to accelerate the efforts to achieve universal sanitation coverage in rural India by 2019. An effective monitoring mechanism is also envisaged Under SBM and therefore it is suggested that rapid action learning units (RALU) should be established at the national, state and district levels and they would be tasked to study and analyse the action taken across the country in rural sanitation programme, evaluating their impact, identifying good practices for up-scaling and also suggesting innovations and a range of options for implementation.
SBM is based on the concept of community led total sanitation (CLTS) and therefore it is important that perspective and concerns of the community must be incorporated in all the studies and their findings. Therefore, this programme is expected to cater this objective of SBM. However, in later stage this learning could be used to improve various other programmes and schemes of the state government of Chhattisgarh with the help of resource pool that would be developed after this workshop.

Purposes:
- To build capacity of students & faculty of post-secondary educational institutions in Chhattisgarh in CBPR
- To facilitate planning for field research to support effective implementation of SBM in the state
- To enable partnership between academia and district level implementing agencies through sharing of research and dissemination of learning
