The UNESCO Chair in Community Based Research & Social Responsibility in Higher Education, in association with the CESS, Hyderabad is organizing a workshop on ‘Learning to do Community Based Research (CBR): Perspectives, Opportunities & Ways forward’. This workshop is a one of the events under the ‘Festival of Learning’ that the chair is organizing at several places and in collaboration with various higher education institutions. This festival marks the culmination of the project that the chair has been undertaking since the last two years on ‘Training the next generation of community based researchers (NextGen Project)’. As this study identifies the existential gaps in training in CBR, and comes forth with best practice models and recommendation, the Chair intends to use this festival and the events planned under it to promote learning and training in CBR.
Carrying forward this idea, this workshop at CESS in Hyderabad aims to build an atmosphere conducive for providing and promoting such training in academia. As training in a field such as CBR involves widespread field research, it is essential that community/civil society organizations are also made part of the process, so that the two stakeholders (Academia and CSOs) can come together to impart quality training to the next generation of researchers/students. Therefore, this workshop will bring together relevant stakeholders on a common platform to share, discuss, deliberate and come up with relevant action points for realizing the broad objectives.
The workshop will also serve as a platform for students where they discuss their ideas/ thoughts and put forth relevant recommendations on as to how they foresee the training process. The students will also be invited to ‘show and share’ their experience in related area of work, in which they have engaged previously. The workshop will also give them an opportunity to discuss their ideas and get tips on carrying it into the future, by the UNESCO Co-Chairs, Dr Budd Hall & Dr Rajesh Tandon. Further, participating in the workshop will be Dr Darlene Clover, Professor, University of Victoria & Walter Lepore (Coordinator, NextGen Project) who will be available for sharing their personal experiences as also guiding the students and other stakeholders on how to pursue the task on ‘teaching and training CBR’, in an effective, useful, and meaningful way.
The workshop will also explore the possibilities of carrying out community based research on the issues of water, sanitation and Hygiene. During the session, practitioners will highlight the opportunities and challenges offered under the recent program of sanitation i.e. Swachh Bharat Mission, as well as narrate experiences from the previous programs on sanitation. The session also aims to dwell upon having an integrated approach for finding out possible solutions to achieve the goal of sanitation for all.
Objectives
Summing up the broad objectives of the workshop, it intends to achieve the following:
- Encourage the students to ‘show and tell’; share their ideas on CBR and suggest the various tenets on which they wish such a training program to be built on.
- Bring together various stakeholders (academia and civil society) in the process, on a common platform.
- Interaction with the UNESCO Co-Chairs; and receiving their feedback in the process.
- Using the process of CBR training to promote interaction and a sense of partnership between the world of theory and practice.
- Having this partnership play a crucial role in overall societal development, by linking it to relevant interventions such as promotion of Rapid Action & Learning Units (RALU), as a means to promote the Clean India Campaign.
Participants
Approximately 40-50 people, including students/faculty from various colleges/universities and representatives from the civil society will be participating in the workshop.
Reportage
At the end of the workshop, a comprehensive report will be prepared, which will be duly shared by all the respective participants and stakeholders. In addition, it will also be posted on the UNESCO Chair website for far and wide dissemination. Updates will also be available via the Facebook page and the Twitter handle of the UNESCO Chair.
