Dr Rajesh Tandon, UNESCO Co-Chair delivered a keynote address at the inaugural plenary of an International Conference on University-Community Engagement “Collaborative Creations Leads to Sustainable Change” at Surabaya, Indonesia during 2-5 August 2016.  Dr Tandon applauded the policy of `Kuliah Kerja Nyata’ (KKN) that encouraged all students to undertake service learning.

He argued that ‘tri-dharma’ of teaching, research and service of Islamic Higher Education in Indonesia should integrate engagement in all three dharmas—purposes. The engagement should be mutually respectful and beneficial. Community Engagement thus influences teaching and research in university as well.

He gifted a set of UNESCO publications entitled `Strengthening Community University Research Partnerships: Global Perspectives’ to the Rector of Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Sunan Ampel Surabay,a Prof. Dr. Abd. A’la.
