MENTORS
- Heleen Grobbelaar: A qualified Dietitian specializing in Community Nutrition, and is a senior lecturer in the Department of Food and Nutrition at the Durban University of Technology. Her work addresses the development needs of children and youth care workers, and current research include developing National Food Based Dietary Guidelines for the Elderly through participatory research.
- Kristena Doorsamy: Ms Doorsamy completed her undergraduate in Child and Youth Development, currently finalising her Masters Degree in Public Administration, and is currently coordinating and lecturing in General Education at Durban University of Technology, aimed at nurturing and developing graduate attributes. The facilitation of this module allows her to encourage critical thinking, social responsibility and civic mindedness.
- Kanya Padayachee: Works at the Gandhi Development Trust, a Non Profit Organization that promotes peace, justice and nonviolence. She coordinates their flagship education project, a community-based Early Childhood Development (ECD) Training Programme. Kanya is currently engaged in community based participatory research towards her PhD to develop an Integral Education ECD programme incorporating African Indigenous Knowledge.

- Workshops on CBPR offered to students on various programmes an also youth organizations. The focus during the sessions is on blended learning which takes place through integration of classroom teaching, online instruction and fieldwork practice. Classroom instruction and interaction include face-to-face and case-based teaching, role play, simulations, storytelling video cases, community members’ participation, and small group discussions. Online instruction allows the participants to construct knowledge through questioning, discussions, sharing of ideas, the analysis of resources from multiple sources, and instructor feedback.
- Students who register for the Community Engagement module in the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the Durban University of Technology are exposed to the CBPR training as part of the registered Community Engagement module.
- Discussions are currently being held to offer the CBPR Course to students, academics and civil society organizations on a broader scale
